C for Crimetime Television

Sorry for the delay, I know I’m intruding on Raven’s space, but my internet decided to take the day off inexplicably, so I’m stuck posting today.

Every night, me and my family gather around the TV for a long surviving family tradition – watching crime shows. I am well aware of the fact that my fellow blogger has already talked about TV shows, but this is a totally different genre. Whether it’s Star World or Fox Crime or AXN or Big CBS Prime, there’s always a show on at primetime that deals with people murdering each other and other people finding out whodunnit. It is always intriguing to see the horrors humans are capable of, and then evaluate for yourself whether their means were justified. One of the reasons I love crime shows is the way they realistically portray unrealistic events and then realistically work us through the processes that go into catching a criminal as tedious or disgusting they may be. The humour they employ in the presence of such disheartening situations also lifts my spirits a lot more than everyday humour – especially when they go for the irony. And though my mom cribs about how these shows systematically desensitize us to violence, she is the most avid viewer – in fact, it is she who wields the remote control that selects which genre of television we shall watch for the evening.

Our family favorite has got to be Criminal Minds. Amazing actors with great complementing personalities and brilliant direction, not to forget, an intriguing plot that ALWAYS ends with them stopping the ‘UnSub’ just before he/she kills someone else and if you were the ‘UnSub’, you’d have almost no chance of surviving this show. Subplots, back stories, romantic entanglements and heartwarming endings make every episode an experience. This show has many a time left me with tears in my eyes or deeply impacted by the portrayal of psychological pathologies.

Castle, Castle, Castle, Castle. And Castle. And Kate Beckett. And his mom. And Alexis. And Detectives Ryan and Esposito. And the antagonistic boss. Yup, I love them all. Castle and Beckett have so much unbelievably good luck that it’s taken for granted that they are immortal. I will not say that it’s realistic, but Castle is arguably the most lovable crime show in existence, with what is probably the longest period of sustained sexual tension in crime show history. Basically, the whole show revolves around them not having sex, which the viewers desperately want them to do. The guy has already expressed his innermost fantasies about her through best-selling fiction, all she has to do is live them out, which she won’t, because she’s too emotionally messed up to handle it (or in other words, she’s badass). Intercourse aside, his daughter, Alexis is so amazingly well-adjusted and supranormal that she was probably zapped down by space aliens, and his mom is probably one of them in disguise. I love the witty dialogues, the intricate puzzles, the resourcefulness that is a prerequisite for all characters and the zany sub plots and random coincindences that leave Castle and Beckett alone together for hours in hair-raising situations, where they come up with new ways not to have sex. This is my personal favorite.

Castle

Bones is probably the mommy show which gave birth to Castle, because Temperance Brennan’s eerie likeness to a frigid is sooooo sexy… not. I honestly don’t see what Boothes sees in her, but they are both great characters nonetheless. The show has an interesting approach to crime, and the tension between the two of them also does help ease the plot along, but they mess it up by going and doing the nasty instead of chastely refusing to acknowledge any feelings either may have for the other. However, the plots never fail to intrigue and impress – there is always an interesting crime wherever the bones are concerned.

I absolutely detest Dexter. I mean, who kills that many people and gets away with it? It’s so unrealistic, they’re not even pretending to make an effort when it comes to sub plots and other details to pull in the viewer. And seriously, what’s with the boss dressed like he’s vacationing on a beach? I mean, there’s just no dignity given to the police profession (even if they have none, let’s at least pretend for welfare’s sake). Let’s not forget his sister who walks in on him killing someone and then believes it was just a set up. No one is THAT dumb! Now that I’m done with Dexter, I’d better disparage White Collar – Neal Caffrey is such a flat personality, he should be an extra, not have an entire TV series revolving around him. And the cop in charge of him acts more like his father whom he’s fallen in love with, it’s not even funny, it’s creepy.

Taking a dump in public and still being unnecessarily dramatic about it.

Why is everyone covering their crotches? :O

Then there’s the never-ending stream of CSI and NCIS shows. I can’t differentiate between them, so I’ll speak heartwarmingly of NCIS I think, which has got the quirky Abby who acts like a little girl yet has a deeper character that usually comes through as well as Ziva who is like the life of the show. Then the various CSIs that I can’t keep track of nearly always have a great storyline with some good humour, and they’re committed to showing crime – they almost never bring in the personal lives of the investigators. The bottomline is, I like these shows a lot.

Finally, Body of Proof is another show I wish they’d bring back to television for ten more seasons. A woman who takes her job far too seriously and ends up doing everyone else’s work for them, rather obsessively, is VERY entertaining. I admire the way she gets whatever she wants and gets away with it. Her attention to detail and ability to reconstruct entire crimes by looking at a body is marvellous. It’s an innovative idea for a show, very original, and her methods of solving crimes may be far from conventional, but she can get away with it because she’s that badass.

All this murder and crime is probably influencing me in a bad way and increasing my tendencies to violence or my threshold of tolerance towards violence. Or it could be giving me analytical and evaluative skills that in no way benefit me. Oh yeah. Either way, I’m still enjoying my evenings watching the same old plots get recycled in creative ways, so as long as I’m fooled, I’m happy 😀

Movie Night And My Love For Tom Hiddleston

First of all I would like to apologize for how late I’m posting. I’ve been having some issues with my internet lately, and that combined with exams are annoying the Friday spirit out of me. : (

In any case, TGIF!

Since I’m posting late, I’ll tell you about my plans for the evening. It’s exam season and instead of studying I am at my parents’ place treating myself to a movie and a pizza since they will be out to dinner. With Dominoes Pizza to the rescue, the only thing I have left to worry about is which movie to watch. Now when I’m by myself, I usually enjoy watching movies I’ve already seen. I just love seeing some of my favourite actors/characters again and I love being able to predict when exactly the perfect punchline or hilarious moment will arrive. I also enjoy the process of ‘fangirling’ and ooh-ing and aah-ing over my favourite actors, especially the dashing Tom Hiddleston (he played Loki in the Avengers) or even Bradley Cooper or Ryan Gosling and who can forget Johnny Depp pf Javier Bardem? Yes, I know most of these actors listed are male, but a girl can’t help it. I do adore Scarlett Johansson, Sandra Bullock and Emma Stone, though.

Now if you’re home for a movie night, order yourself some junk food and get settled on the couch with a bunch of pillows and all your remote controls around you. The objective is NOT to get up unless you want to go to the loo, and even that is pushing it. Now I’m going to tell you about a couple of my all-time favourite movies along with movies I have recently seen that I think you should definitely check out. Of course, my tastes and yours may not exactly match, so you can always just go for your favourites instead.

My all time favourite movies include:

1. The Avengers. Action, superheroes, killer special effects and Tom Hiddleston. Need I say more? This movie is one of the best I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. An incredible star cast, a brilliant plot with good humour and some feels, The Avengers is definitely my unbeatable number one.

2. She’s The Man. This movie combines two of my favourite things: comedy and Shakespeare. Amanda Bynes is absolutely brilliant in the lead and god do I miss her. This movie is a modern-day version of William Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ and will have you in splits. A must must must see.

3. The Proposal. Sandra Bullock is a wonderful actor and she proves it yet again here in her role as the Super-Bitch Boss. Yeah, I’ll admit Ryan Reynolds does nothing but stand there and look pretty, but this movie is definitely something you need to see.

4.Olympus Has Fallen. I just saw this movie yesterday and loved it. It’s got Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart, so it’s already a win. Again, great special effects and lots of action and not really for those who are squeamish. It’s a little too USA-centric, but then again it is an American movie and a very well made one at that.

5. Hope Springs. Starring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, it’s about an elderly couple who are trying to bring the magic back into their marriage. It’s sweet and quite funny, but again not for the whole family.

6. English Vinglish. So I’m now going into a couple of the Hindi movies I adore. If you haven’t seen it yet, this movie is a must watch. Sridevi has done a wonderful job as an ordinary Indian housewife who is on a journey to empower herself through finally learning English.

7. Karan Arjun. Yes this movie may be the cheesiest of all the cheeses you have had, but it’s a classic. It’s from back when Salman Khan was still tolerable and Shah Rukh Khan’s pre-plastic surgery days and is about two brothers who are reincarnated to take revenge after they were murdered in cold blood. A little unrealistic (by a little I mean a lot) but I still love the plot, the music and the sound effects that go all ‘dhishum dhishum’.

8. Taare Zameen Par. This movie is perfect if you’re looking for a good cry. One of Aamir Khan’s best movies to date, it’s about a little boy who is dyslexic and does his best to cope with the situation. He is sent to boarding school since his parents believe he’s misbehaving, but he was actually dyslexic and no one finds out until the new art teacher (Aamir Khan) recognizes the signs. A story of learning and love, my dad shed a few tears in the theater too.

9. Om Shanti Om. I actually really loved this movie. I seem to have a thing for plots that include reincarnation, and I have no idea why. It’s based in the 70s and is about how a small time actor (Shah Rukh Khan) falls for a star actress (Deepika Padukone), but ends up witnessing her murder and also getting killed in the process. He is reincarnated and becomes a top actor in the present day but is plagued with images of his previous life and starts trying to catch his lost love’s murderer. Shah Rukh Khan may also have a thing for these kind of movies actually. I really love the colours and the sets and the songs are quite lovely, even though Deepika Padukone looks like a mannequin throughout the film.

10. Delhi Belly.Words cannot describe how funny this movie is. Comedy with a serious plot and MAGNIFICENT direction. I really can’t ask for more. Add Imran Khan to the mix and you have an instant hit. I love how genuine the characters in this movie are and how realistic the situation is as compared to reincarnation and murder. A MUST watch.

So there you have it, that’s my list. Now I’m sorry if I haven’t named some of the more recent Bollywood movies, but have you seen what they come up with these days? Complete and utter, mass-produced, bullshit. What is the difference between Salman Khan’s character in ‘Dabangg’ and Ajay Devgn’s character in ‘Singham’? I’ll tell you. NOTHING. There’s no plot, no characterization and definitely no substance. What’s the similarity? They both made a shit-ton of money, which I don’t understand. I have no words. None.

In any case, I hope you check out some of the movies on my list and maybe enjoy them. Don’t forget to order that junk food though! Have a great Friday night.

Cheers! : )

The Toonage Generation

Hello pretty people! I trust you’ve all been well and good. Make use of your youth, and if you’re old, your young heart to go out, take in the fresh sunshine, play Holi with your friends, go on a date with your partner, party like it’s the end of the world and all that. Yeah, just go out and live your life!

But the main reason you should be out is because the TV shows suck. Like really, really bad. Rather than targeting all of them I am going to focus on cartoons today. Kiddies of 2013, sorry to say this, but you guys probably have the worst childhood ever. Not only do the TV shows suck, the world is more fucked up than ever.

My first love will always be anime but well, most anime is not for children and I’m devoting a lot more posts for that so for now stay with me. Come, join me as I reminisce the good ol’ days when cartoons actually used to be good, funny, in 2D and made our childhood awesome. Also included are what’s coming on TV now, to be fair and all.

(This post might be detrimental to your feels so sensitive readers are warned.)

AWESOME CARTOONS KIDS NOWADAYS SHOULD BE WATCHING.

1. Pokemon

Who can forget Pokemon? Back when it was good. Like in its first few seasons with the good pokemon like Charmander, Bulbasaur, Jigglipuff etc. The times with Brock and Misty. Those seasons were so good. Now, you’re just wondering why Pikachu’s anorexic. What the hell, man. How many regions are there in the pokemon world anyway? Only 2 of them are good i.e Kanto and Johto. They don’t make ’em like they used to.

A little something to jog your memory.

Sing with me. I WANNA BEE THE VERY BEST, THAT NO ONE EVER WAS!

Felt good, didn’t it? :’)

2. Tom and Jerry

Oh well to be fair, they do put Tom and Jerry. Except it’s past the bed time of every normal kid and airs at 10 P.M! Fail, Cartoon Network! You fail on every level possible.

Who doesn’t remember Tom and Jerry? The episode where Nibbles has to deliver a letter to Jerry’s “girls” and has to keep evading Tom to do it, the episode where this little girl owns Tom and they all end up singing mama yo quiero. Ah, good times. Back when stupid Doraemon wasn’t playing 24/7. They play another newer, suckier Tom and Jerry sometimes. It just isn’t the same obviously.

Another awesome scene for you.

3. Hey Arnold!

This show has to be one of my favourites. It worked on so many levels. It was funny, entertaining and relatable. Who doesn’t love Helga? All of us has a Helga in us. I have good memories of watching  this show when I was 9 years old and hating Lila, that annoying little goody-two shoes and rooting wholeheartedly for Helga.  Back when Nickelodeon used to be great. All the other channels have sunk but I don’t think any have sunk as low as Nickelodeon has.

4. Dexter’s Lab

Now it’s just getting depressing. Y U SUCK SO MUCH, 21ST CENTURY? 😦  I miss all these shows so much. Who can forget the antics of Deedee and her trademark “Ooh, what does this button do?” And Mandark with his “Hahaha.Hahahahah.” laugh. Today’s children will never have the benefit of watching such amazing cartoons.

Theme song for your benefit.

5.The Looney Tunes Show

Okay, I’m biased. Bugs Bunny was the best thing on the Looney Tunes. But seriously, it was so amazing. The elaborate plots, the crazy schemes and so many characters. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Pepe le pew, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd. All of them were so hilarious! Why, I ask you! Why can’t they put these shows back on air?

A bugs moment.

So these are some of the memorable cartoons of my childhood. Honestly, these aren’t the top 5 or anything. I have so many cartoons in my memory that I honestly couldn’t rate them and put them up. Samurai Jack, Kim Possible, The Fairly Oddparents, Winx Club, Sabrina: The Animated Series, Scooby Doo, The Wild Thornberrys, Rugrats, Powerpuff Girls, Xiaolin Showdown, As told by Ginger, Recess, Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League: Unlimited, Foster’s home for Imaginary Friends and so many more come to mind when I remember the stuff I had to grow up with.

Cartoon Network still puts some shows on. At 2.A.M. I don’t understand why they can’t put this stuff back on air for all of us rather than just insomniacs. If you can put it at 4.freaking A.M, you can put it at 4.freaking P.M

The strange thing is so many of these cartoons actually had a fair bit of violence. Episodes of Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes had dynamites exploding, bloodshed, cigarettes and all that. Stuff nowadays rely on absolute nonsense. People are so worried that their children will get “influenced”. I don’t think anyone had to worry about us throwing dynamites at each other. Just goes to show how fucked up the world had become.

*Sigh*

As promised, I will put up some stuff that comes on now. As I flip through the various cartoon channels, this meme pretty much sums up what I feel.

3cd8a33a.png

Ugh. Let’s get it over with. I’ve only seen them long enough to switch channels so I’m not posting all of them.

I’ll start with the positive. This is the only cartoon that’s actually good that comes on.

1. Phineas and Ferb! You are the only shining light at the end of one depressing tunnel! The songs are decent, good characters and plot and great humour. Of course it doesn’t come close to the stuff I’m used to, but considering the crap that’s coming on, this is gold. Even without it, it’s a decent show. I like it. It’s sad for kids though that this is the only good thing coming on.

And now it goes downhill.

2. Ninja Hattori. This show is vile. Words fail me to describe how annoying it is. As if it isn’t annoying enough with the art, the hindi dub just sucks your soul from the afterlife and gives it to Satan. Sometimes, I wonder if the world we’re living in is hell or not.

I can’t believe I’m actually posting a picture.

Ninja Hattori

Just. Words fail me. They do. WHO WATCHES THIS? AND IF ANYONE DOES, PARENTS, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

And then we have this abomination.

3. It’s called Doraemon and it’s dubbed in Hindi. That’s all I know, and that’s all I ever plan to know.

There’s some other shitty show called Perman also but these two are enough torture, wouldn’t you agree?

You might be thinking. “Oh. They’re only 3 or 4 shows. Why is she complaining? They’re probably on only for a couple of hours a day.”

Guys, please switch on your cartoon channels any time during the day. This crap is on ALL DAY.

Anyway, to parents who want their children to grow up with something decent, I beg of you: download these cartoons from somewhere or buy DVDs. You cannot have your child watch the shit that’s coming on. Seriously.

If you can’t do that also, another alternative: Anime. (I’d definitely have included Dragonball Z in the list but it was sort of my gateway to all other anime so I can’t.) They’ve removed the Animax channel from my Television. To people who still have it, please let your kid watch it. Granted, some stuff is inappropriate but there are quite a few good children’s anime too.

And I leave you with that. If you guys have any memorable cartoons you saw in your childhood that wasn’t mentioned in the list, write them down in the comment’s section or post it on our facebook page. If you have any questions or an opinion you think I might be interested in, write to me. If you need recommendations for cartoons or TV shows or if you want me to do a post on a particular topic, I’m always willing to listen.

Until next week. 🙂
